Chives – A Breakdown on this Onion Flavored Herb
Chives! Not only are they delicious, but they are extremely good for you!! Chives are fairly well known as a common herb or spice. Stores regularly carry it and many people have it the in their fridge or cupboards. Chives add a green onion-ish/light garlicy taste to whatever dish you are using it with. Often it’s cut up and used as a garnish. Well, we are here to tell you to ADD MORE CHIVES! Especially fresh chives, as the dried version in the shakeable bottles usually has very little nutrients left.
Chives are very high in vitamin C and in iron. Chives are a member of the lily family actually and they can easily be grown at home in a window box! Chives have the ability to stimulate the appetite and also aid in digestion. They are also very useful against anemia with it’s very high iron content. This herb has been used for over 5,000 years and also comes with the belief that their grass like leaves could chase away evil spirits and disease.
For the MAXIMUM benefit, chives should be eaten FRESH. TO add a little more chive to your diet, try replacing onions or scallions with chives! They are event tasty just to snack on with maybe a little dip (dairy-free of course). Go Chives Go!
